False-colour chest X-ray in a case of left ventricular hypertrophy, the enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. The shadow of the enlarged heart (coloured orange) protrudes abnormally towards the right of image, that is, over the region of the left lung. Severe ventricular heart disease is associated with the term "heart failure", and carries a poor prognosis. Its major causes are coronary artery disease and hypertension (high blood pressure), so prevention is related to the careful management & treatment of these underlying causes.
