Rattlesnake entrails. Watercolour illustrating the internal anatomy and organs of a dissected rattlesnake. The artwork is by US artist and architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820). Latrobe moved to Philadelphia, USA, in around 1798, submitting papers to the American Philosophical Society describing his observations in geology and natural history. This artwork is part of a series that was previously attributed to Philadelphia-resident US botanist, naturalist and physician Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815), who published a memoir on the rattlesnake in 1796, and exhibited a set of drawings in 1802.
