Nasal lining. Light micrograph of a section through the epithelial lining of the nasal cavity. The epithelial cells (pink, lower frame) have microscopic hair-like structures known as cilia (not seen) on their exposed surfaces. These are covered with a sticky mucus that traps dust and other inhaled particles. The mucus is produced by the Bowman's glands in the underlying mucous membrane. Magnification: x700 when printed at 10cm wide
