Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748). Historical portrait of the Swiss mathematician Johann (Jean) Bernoulli. Johann followed his brother Jacques into mathematics and the two of them did pioneering work in calculus. Johann applied calculus to the measurement of curves, differential equations and mechanical problems. He also discovered the series of numbers that now bear his name.
