Pamukkale travertine deposits, with some of the ruins of Hierapolis in the background. These travertine terraces and classical ruins are located in south-western Turkey. Travertine is calcite or aragonite (both a variety of limestone). It precipitates from hot spring water saturated with calcium carbonate. Hierapolis was founded in around the second century BC, probably as a spa town to take advantage of the presence of hot springs. Hierapolis-Pamukkale was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
