Hospital heat lamp cabinets. Patients encased up to their necks in heat lamp cabinets in a hospital. These are Burdick cabinets, branded Radio-Vitant. The medical heat lamps and thermometers are seen through the windows. The Burdick company was founded in 1913 in Milton, Wisconsin, USA, by Fred Frazier 'Fritz' Burdick (1869-1950). It manufactured light-based therapy lamps and equipment. Such treatments have traditionally been part of physiotherapy (physical therapy). This session is taking place at the Walter Reed General Hospital (later the Walter Reed Army Medical Center), established in Washington DC, USA, in 1909. Photographed circa 1920-21.
