Mars surface from the Opportunity rover (partly seen in lower frame). This image, taken on 26th January 2004, shows the rim of the small crater in which the rover landed. The rim of the crater is estimated to be around ten metres from the rover, with the total diameter of the crater being some 20 metres. At upper right (orange) is an outcrop of rocks, an unusual feature. The sandy soil" in the crater is made up of a combination of fine red grains and coarser grey grains. This image was taken by the panoramic camera in near-infrared, green and blue light. The colours were combined to approximate true colour. Opportunity landed in the Mars' Meridiani Planum area on 24th January 2004."
