Robot nervous net. Canadian roboticist Mark Tilden holding his invention, an analogue robot insect control device known as a nervous net. Traditionally robots have been controlled by a computer, a digital device based on binary logic. Tilden's nervous net, and hence his robots function using the non-digital analogue approach. This entails the nervous net generating a dynamic system of interactions between itself and the outside world. Tilden's analogue robots have no pre-programming, but negotiate problems by trying to reach an equilibrium with their environment. Tilden is a researcher at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. Photographed in 1999.
