Lev Landau. Portrait of Lev Davidovich Landau (1908-68), Russian physicist. Landau obtained his doctorate at the age of 19 and studied with Bohr and Rutherford before becoming Professor of Physics at Moscow in 1937. In 1932, after the neu- tron's discovery, he proposed the existence of neutron stars. In 1935, he devised a mathematical treatment of magnetic domains. From 1937 he worked with Kapitza on low-temperature physics. Landau studied the unusual properties of helium below a certain temperature and explained the behaviour in terms of the collective behaviour of the atoms in the liquid. For this work he was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in physics.
