William Friese-Greene (1855-1921), British motion picture pioneer. Friese-Greene showed his film to a public audience in 1890 but his system was poor and the audience were not impressed. Public interest in motion pictures was not truly aroused until the first public screening of a film made by the Lumiere brothers in France in 1895.
