Jerusalem - The Dome of the Rock. Oldest existing Muslim monument, built 685-691 as a shrine for pilgrims (a mashhad). The Rock is sacred to Muslims as site from which Muhammad ascended to heaven, and to Jews as place where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac.
