Hornet (Vespa sp.). Here the hornets large compound main eyes can be seen either side of its head. These are supported by three 'simple' eyes (ocelli, black dots, centre) arranged in a triangle, which are thought to be horizon detectors. Photographed in Kent, UK, in August.
