Worm trapped inside a lab-on-a-chip, fluorescence light micrograph. This lab-on-a-chip, created by Mehmet Fatih Yanik, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, can sort, screen and manipulate Caenorhabditis elegans worms at high speed and high volume. It traps the worms using microscopic sized suction channels. C. elegans is a nematode worm used by scientists to investigate biological phenomena such as ageing, metabolism and neurological diseases. Yanik's lab-on-a-chip speeds up the process of screening worms for drugs and genetics trials, which is normally done by hand. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
