Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English jurist and philosopher. Bentham was born into a wealthy London family and was a child prodigy. He attended Westminster School and at just 12 years old went up to Queen's College Oxford. He was trained as a lawyer and was called to the bar in 1769. Bentham was a prolific author and social theorist. He was a leading utilitarian, as such he supported individual freedom, the abolition of slavery and the death penalty, the disestablishment of the Church and equal rights for women and the decriminalisation of homosexuality. He also famously campaigned for animal rights. His campaigning for education for all led to the founding of University College London, where his embalmed and dressed body famously still resides. This engraving comes from Bentham's An Introduction to the Principles and Morals of Legislation, published at London in 1823.
