Iceland, Reykjavik. The statue of Jon Sigurdsson sits in the centre of the Austurvollur ( eastern field ) in the old town square. Jon Sigurdsson was a scholar and a poet who lobbied Copenhagen for free trade and started the process by which Iceland gained its independence in 1944. Iceland's national day is the 17th of June which is his birthday.
