Here the food is churned together with stomach acids and digestive enzymes, forming a liquid mixture called chyme. This passes to the duodenum (blue), the first part of the small intestine, where digestion begins. The food passes through the jejunum (green) and the ileum (yellow) before passing out of the small intestine to the large intestine (red) at the caecum. The appendix (finger-like, lower left) is a blind tube attached to the caecum. In the large intestine (colon), water is absorbed before faeces reach the rectum (lower centre), from where they are excreted.
