Diabetics either lack insulin, or cannot properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is released into the blood to promote the uptake of glucose, the basic sugar that fuels the body cells and provides energy. A lack of insulin causes the blood sugar levels to rise dangerously high. Blood sugar (glucose) is formed by the body by breaking down carbohydrates, fats and protein in the diet. A planned diet is essential for a diabetic to keep blood sugar levels normal, and this can be helped by avoiding sweets unless they are sugar-free.
