An oncolytic virus is either a naturally-occurring or genetically modified virus that only infects cancer cells and destroys them by a process known as lysis. This destruction releases the contents of the cancer cell, which prime the body's immune system to attack other cancerous cells. Clinical trials of oncolytic viral therapy are underway.
