Ferritin molecule, illustration. Ferritin is a protein that acts as an iron (Fe) store, and is mainly found in the liver, kidneys and spleen. It is a globular protein that consist of 24 subunits. Iron is stored in the centre of the protein as iron(III) oxide, a non-toxic form of the metal. Ferritin nanoparticles are being used as a platform to deliver vaccines to the body.
