HGPRTase. Molecular model of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRTase) from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. HGPRTase is involved in the purine salvage pathway. This pathway recovers purine bases during the degradation of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) so that they can be converted to nucleotides and used to build new DNA and RNA molecules. This is essential for the proliferation of the parasite in human blood cells.
