Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of symbiotic archaea (yellow) and bacteria (blue) collected from an underwater thermal vent in the Pacific Ocean. Archaea are single-celled organisms that are similar to bacteria, but that also have characteristics of higher organisms. They are often found in extreme environments. This Archaean is a methanotroph, that is, it uses methane as an energy source. However, the conditions for methane oxidation are unfavourable in the marine sediments it is found in and can only be carried out if sulphur-reducing bacteria are present to function as a source of electrons for the archaea. Magnification: x8,000 when printed at 12cm wide.
