Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the posterior pituitary gland (neurohypophysis). The posterior pituitary gland consists mainly of axons of neurosecretory cells coming from the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus. These axons show thickenings full of neurosecretory granules containing oxytocin and vasopressin (ADH).
