European hornet (Vespa crabro) eating an ant. Hornets are large wasps with yellow and brownish-red striped bodies, reddish wings and a yellow head. This species stings in response to being stepped on or grabbed, but generally avoids conflict. They have a diverse diet, hunting insects like dragonflies, beetles and moths.
