Illustration of the daughter of the French Royalist general Charles Francois de Virot de Sombreuil defending him from attack at the Prison de l?™Abbaye, Paris, France, in September 1792. Between 160-220 people were killed at the prison between the 2nd and 4th September, as part of the September Massacres of the French Revolution (1789-1799). Sombreuil survived the September massacres, but was guillotined on 17th June 1794. From 'Les Prisons de l'Europe' by Jules Alboise and Auguste Maquet (1845).
