Illustration of the British physicist Peter Mansfield (1933-2017). Mansfield is best known for inventing slice selection for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and understanding how the radio signals from MRI can be mathematically analysed, making interpretation of the signals into a useful image a possibility. He was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which he shared with Paul Lauterbur, for his discoveries concerning MRI.
