Lesser stag beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus), a member of the Lucanidae family. A much smaller cousin of the larger stag beetle, it is still a large beetle that is found in a range of woody habitats including gardens, where it depends on dead wood. This species is found throughout Europe. The larvae feed on soft decaying old wood. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in August.
