Battle Against Tropical Disease -- A test for sickle-cell anemia being made by Miss Dorothy A. Brandful, first woman laboratory attendant to work at the Medical Research Institute, Gold Coast. The Medical Research Institute in the Gold Coast carried on the often dangerous laboratory working the battle against tropical disease. The Institute was founded in 1920 by Dr. McAfee, first director of Medical Research. In the 1931 financial slump a large proportion of the European Staff was cut so research gave place mainly to routine work. The Institute collaborated with members of the Rockefeller Yellow Fever Committee in 1925-27 who were dealing with a yellow fever outbreak in the Gold Coast. May 24, 1951.
