Battle Against Tropical Diseases -- A member of the staff of the Medical Research Institute, Gold Coast, Mr. G. A. Agbenu, examines a test which will determine the presence of worm infestation. Mr. Agbenu saw nine years service in the Northern Territories on trypanosomiasis investigations. The Medical Research Institute in the Gold Coast carried on the often dangerous laboratory wok in the battle against tropical disease. The institute was founded in 1920 by Dr. McAfee, first director of Medical Research. In the 1931 financial slump a large proportion of the European Staff was out so research gave place mainly to routine work. The Institute collaborated with members of the Rockefeller Yellow Fever Commission in 1925-27 who were dealing with a yellow fever outbreak in the Gold Coast. May 24, 1951.
