The Third of May 1808 is a painting completed in 1814 by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya. Even though Goya had shown French sympathies in the past, the slaughter of his countrymen and the horrors of war made a profound impression on the artist. This is a depiction of the execution of patriots from Madrid by a firing squad from Napoleon's army in reprisal for their uprising against the French occupation on the second of May, 1808.
