Testing Atlantic telegraph cable, 1866 painting. This is the fifth picture in a series, showing US businessman Cyrus West Field and colleagues on board ship on 1 September 1866, awaiting a signal via cable from Ireland. Others present include the scientist William Thomson, Captain James Anderson, Samuel Morse, and the engineer Samuel Canning. A total of 4200 kilometres of cable were laid across the Atlantic, with a total of two cables operating by the end of 1866. This oil painting is from a series by British artist Robert Charles Dudley (1826-1909).
