Landing the shore end of the Atlantic telegraph cable, 1866 painting. This is the first picture in a series, showing the laying of one end of the cable off the island of Valentia on the coast of Ireland on 7 July 1866. A total of 4200 kilometres of cable were laid across the Atlantic, with a total of two cables operating by the end of 1866. This oil painting is from a series by British artist Robert Charles Dudley (1826-1909).
