Final Quarter Moon, 17th-century illustration. This engraving was produced in the 1630s based on observations made in early 1636 by French artist Claude Mellan (1598-1688). The telescope he used to observe the Moon was a relatively new invention, having been developed in around 1608. The engravings were commissioned by Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc and Pierre Gassendi.
