Mental asylum patient, 19th century. This patient was an inmate at the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum, where she was photographed by medical doctor Hugh Welch Diamond in the period 1850 to 1858. Diamond was the superintendent of the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum from 1848 to 1858. Diamond considered photographs able to catch the mental state of a patient. This albumen silver print was prepared from a glass negative.
