The powerful jaws of the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) can give a serious bite. Snapping turtles are fine swimmers, found in fresh waters with mucky bottoms. Females, mainly in June, search riversides and open areas far from water for egg-laying sites. This wild turtle is in Ludlow, Massachusetts, in the fall. They are New England's largest freshwater turtle.
