Daguerreotype mania. 19th-century illustration titled 'La daguerreotypomanie', showing the rush to try photography after the photographic process invented by artist and photographer Louis-Jacques Mande Daguerre (1787-1851) was revealed in 1839. Long lines of people are waiting to be photographed, with entrepreneurs offering training and photographic equipment. The gallows represent the death of art, and a balloon (upper right) is an early example of aerial photography. This lithograph, by French artist Theodore Maurisset, was published in Paris in 1840.
