At this spot behind the walls of Kilmainham Prison fifty years ago , the British executed fourteen men for leading the ill fated Easter Rising ... in the hopes of self determination for Ireland . A fifteenth man , sentenced to death but later reprieved because of his American birth was Eamonn de Valera , now President of Ireland who this weekend placed a wreath of commemoration at the spot during anniversary ceremonies . 11 April 1966
