Battles of Narvik memorial site. Snowbound landscape and building at a site marking the Battles of Narvik that took place in this area of Norway from 9 April to 8 June 1940 during World War II. This engagement was both a naval battle in the nearby Ofotfjord, and a land battle in the mountains surrounding the city of Narvik. The land battle was fought by Norwegian, French, British, and Polish troops against German troops, fighting for control of the iron supply from Sweden. Although the Germans lost the battles, the Norwegian Campaign ended in June 1940 when the Allies withdrew from Norway following the fall of France. Photographed in January 2016.
