Mercury laboratory thermometer. This sealed tube has a bulb of mercury at one end (bottom). As the mercury warms, it expands up the tube in proportion to its temperature, allowing the temperature to be read off the scale. The range of temperatures measured is from minus 10 to 110 degrees Celsius. The temperature displayed here is typical room temperature, just above 20 degrees Celsius.
