Queen parrotfish (Scarus vetula), supermale. This species of parrotfish has two kinds of males. One that begins life as a male and the other that begins life as a female before transforming into males. These sexual developments are marked by significant colour change phases with the supermale as the most colourful. A supermale spawns with either an individual female or a group of females, while ordinary males spawn in groups with other males. This means that a supermales genes are more likely to be passed on to a new generation. These fish can grow up to around 64cm and are found in the western Atlantic region. They inhabit coral reefs with clear water. They are diurnal and sleep on the seabed during the night. Photographed in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean.
