Merlet's scorpionfish (Rhinopias aphanes). This rare fish inhabits coral reefs in the tropical western Pacific Ocean. It uses its cryptic colouration to hide from both predators and prey. It feeds by waiting for its prey, mostly smaller fish, to approach before sucking it into its mouth with a huge and rapid gulp. The spines on its back contain a poison which deters predators. Photographed off Papua New Guinea.
