Buckminsterfullerene molecules, illustration. Buckminsterfullerene is a structurally distinct form (allotrope) of carbon, consisting of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a spherical structure. The arrangement of atoms forms interlinking hexagonal and pentagonal rings, resembling a football. These spherical fullerenes are sometimes called buckyballs.
