Close-up portrait of the El Segundo flower-loving fly (Rhaphiomidas terminatus terminatus). This animal was thought to be extinct since the end of the 1960s but a small remnant population was discovered on the Malaga Dune in Palos Verdes Estates in the early 2000s. The population is estimated at fewer than 100 individuals, possibly as few as 50. Found only on one part of one sand dune, a golf course expansion would doom the species to extinction; Palos Verdes Estates, California, United States of America
