Astronomers at the University of Zurich believe that Mars; two present satellites, Phobos and Deimos, are the product of an impact early in Mars' history. By tracing their orbits back in time, they estimate that they originated from a single point. This, the scientists say, is evidence that Mars initially had a single, larger moon, which was split in two following a collision with another object.
