Herpesvirus immune inhibitor protein. Molecular model of the protein ICP47 from the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). This protein prevents antigens from the virus being presented to immune cells, therefore masking it from the immune system. This virus infects epithelial cells around the mouth, causing fluid-filled blisters known as cold sores. There is no known cure for herpes infection and the virus remains in the body for life.
