Prostate cancer. Light micrograph of a section through prostate tissue showing adenocarcinoma. Cell nuclei (black, round) are seen. A carcinoma is a cancer that arises in epithelial tissue. An adenocarcinoma arises from glandular epithelial tissue. The prostate gland is found in males at the base of the bladder. It surrounds the urethra (the bladder's external outlet), secreting a fluid into it as part of the urethra's function as the ejaculatory duct. The growth of the cancer can impede urination. Metastasis (spread) of the cancer can cause death. Treatment may involve the surgical removal of the prostate gland, hormonal therapy and radiotherapy. Magnification unknown.
