Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing large dilations in rough endoplasmic reticulum (light brown). These dilations appear in damaged cells and prove the reticular nature of the interconnected cavities. Note that the Golgi complex (at top) is not dilated, proving that it is not physically connected with the endoplasmic reticulum.
