Extinct gar fish (Atractosteus straussi) fossil. Atractosteus is a genus of gars (ray-finned fish) that lived in the Americas and Africa since the Cretaceous period. This fossil dates back to the Middle Eocene period, 47 million years ago. Found in Messel, Germany.
