Qalat Jabar castle on the left bank of Lake Assad, near Ar-Raqqah, Syria, 2001. Primarily the work of Nur ad-Din, who rebuilt the castle from 1168 onwards. Photograph taken before the Syrian civil war. In 2014, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant captured the castle. Syrian Democratic Forces recaptured the site in 2017 as part of its Raqqa offensive.
