Llo solar power plant, near Llo in the Pyrenees-Orientales, France. This is a Fresnel-type thermodynamic concentration solar power plant with energy storage. It consists of extensive arrays of linear Fresnel reflectors (mirrors), just above ground level, which focus solar radiation onto a grid of absorber pipes 10 metres above, which appear to glow white here. The solar heat turns water in the pipes into steam which powers a turbine and generates electricity. The plant also has a steam storage capacity, enabling electricity to be produced when the sun is not shining or at night. Fresnel reflectors work in the same way as a Fresnel lens, each reflector having a shallow curved base while the top surface is flat. This can be seen at the end of each linear reflector.
