At these locations, the epidermis (skin surface lining) has an additional lucidum layer, which is the pink line in the top third of this image. The stratum lucidum is beneath the keratin layer (dark purple at the top) and the remaining epidermis (light purple occupying bottom half of picture). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10 centimetres.
